It’s taking the internet by storm and stretching the boundaries of social media, Online videos are not only causing a stir, they’re dramatically increasing SEO results and bringing in more clients. Dave Kenyon from HitFire explains why video on your website is the way forward and offers you a ‘HOT OPENING SPECIAL’ to get you started.
Marketing Advantages Of Using Video On Your Website
By Dave Kenyon, Managing Director HitFire
When I click onto a website, I want to quickly understand the product or service offering, understand a bit about the company and determine whether it’s what I’m looking for and if it is going to meet my needs.
I want to be engaged, I want to be able to trust, understand and even be entertained. Professionally shot online video, embedded on your website, is a great way to immediately engage, entertain, educate and increase your customer’s trust and provide a truly dynamic web experience. It can also increase your credibility and help to establish authority and value.
Types of web videos can include a dynamically shot, ‘Introduction to the CEO and/or staff’. This type of online video gives a great opportunity for your customers, visiting your website, to meet you and your staff, online. Your web video may be a ‘How To video’ or ‘product tutorial video’ demonstrating a product or service. Using a professional presenter is a great way to engage your customers when creating this type of information/marketing video.
Other types of web video include the more traditional web commercial or even a comedic web commercial that may go ‘viral’. Three simple hints when creating viral videos (online videos which are shared from one person to another and receive many thousands of views), is to look for subject matter which is extremely unusual, funny or topical or all of the above. Video Frequently Asked Questions are also a great tool for engaging with your customer base online.
Web videos need to be punchy, engaging, dynamic and to the point. In terms of the duration of a web video, I would always advise on a short video. What’s short I hear you say? Well if it’s a ‘Meet the CEO’ style video, I would recommend no longer than a minute. A product tutorial might be longer – say three minutes to five minutes. If in doubt, and you think it’s perhaps too long, then cut it in half and call it part 1 and part 2.
Distribution via social media
The same web video, which is embedded in your website, can also be used as a mini web commercial and distributed via social media sites via video sharing sites (YouTube, Vimeo), social networking sites (Twitter, Facebook), podcasts, social bookmarking sites and blogs. There are a number of advantages of distributing your videos via social media. Firstly, the more social media sites that you can distribute your video to, the greater the chances of being picked up by search engines. The graph below shows how video search, distribution and syndication networks can be used to drive traffic back to your website.

Increasing the number of videos on your website will also play a factor in increasing your Search Engine Optimisation. By using the principles of SEO when setting up the video pages such as using keyword specific meta tags and keyword laden descriptions of the video content, and then also distributing this video to social networking sites, you are tapping into the new principles of Video Search Engine Optimisation VSEO.
Google’s ‘universal search ’(1), which is now the standard Google web search (since about 2007), returns results which include individual videos as well web pages. By tagging your videos with your URL and your desired keywords, you are able to increase your ability to be found and your Google ranking for those keywords will increase.
